Jack A. Tobias

May 17, 1937 — April 6, 2025

Eaton, OH

Jack A. Tobias, born on May 17, 1937, in Montgomery County, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, at the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio. A devoted community member, Jack lived a life characterized by his dedication to service and an enduring commitment to family and friends.

Jack graduated from Dixie High School in New Lebanon, Ohio, in 1955. He retired from McCall’s Corporation (later known as Dayton Press), but his work life reflected a wide range of interests and talents. Jack was truly a “Jack of all trades” — he served as food service director at Woodland Trails Boy Scout Camp, worked as a chef at the Antiquity House Inn, swept chimneys, maintained facilities at Eaton National Bank, and was a respected fixture at Lake Lakengren, where he was widely known for his ingenuity and willingness to go the extra mile.

A proud Army veteran, Jack dedicated over 28 years of service to his country, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class in the Ohio National Guard 1487 Transportation Company. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #215 in Eaton, Ohio. His commitment to service extended beyond the military as he was a member of the Bolivar Lodge #82 F&AM in Eaton and the Scottish Rite.

Jack was a humble man with a calm spirit and clever wit. He enjoyed the quiet life at Lake Lakengren, where he cherished time on his pontoon boat, The Queen Mary. His fondness for the outdoors also manifested in his love for snow skiing and relaxing afterward with a Keoke Coffee. Jack had a passion for horseracing and loved spending time at the track, savoring the thrill of the races and the camaraderie it brought. He also lovingly cared for his ducks on Bantas Creek and Lake Lakengren—a pastime that brought him happiness and kept the wildlife well-fed.

Among his achievements was an extensive matchbook collection, which he started in childhood and developed as a member of the Rathkamp Society of Matchbook Collectors. His most treasured items were the matchbooks gifted to him by family members and friends, tangible reminders of the deep connections he held dear.

Jack Tobias leaves behind memories of a life well-lived, marked by an unwavering devotion to his community and family. He was a gentle soul with a kind and generous heart. His legacy will live on, inspiring anyone lucky enough to have known him, shared a laugh with him, or enjoyed a Little Kings Cream Ale by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Henry “Mike” and Ada Lavina (Bowser) Tobias.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Connie J. Covington Tobias; sons Todd (Chris Ott) Tobias of Bailey, CO, and Tadd (Jason Atwater) Tobias of the San Francisco Bay area; his beloved dog Toby; and many friends.
