BATES, JAMES, M. of North Augusta, SC died at his home, March 26, 2015 with Louise, his wife of 31 years at his side. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by one sister, Rev. Dr. Marjorie Thompson of Arcanum and a large extended family of nieces and nephews. Formerly of West Alexandria, Ohio, Jim left Preble County in 1951 to begin a life-long career dedicated to service to country and community. Immediately following high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the South Pacific. Later he transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard. His retirement service record totals twenty-four years: 7 years in the U.S. Navy and 17 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his active duty Jim served in both the Korean War and Desert Storm as well as during numerous climate disasters along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Following military duty, Jim continued to serve his community as a dedicated law enforcement officer, detective, court investigator, and probation officer in Florida and Georgia. He was lockmaster on the Savannah River for several years, earned his papers as a licensed boat captain, piloted the Princess Augusta, and opened and operated the Riverwalk Marina in Augusta, GA. Jim also gave many hours of local service utilizing his personal skills performing home repairs for family and friends and widowed ladies identified through his local church. He was a member of Masonic York and Scottish Rites, the Acia Lodge and the American Legion. A memorial service for this servant of God and country will be held at St John Church, West Alexandria, OH at 11am on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Rev. George Sidwell and Rev.
