John Powell, 82, of Lewisburg, OH, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Vancrest of Eaton. He was born October 11, 1935, in Trenton, Ohio, to the late Stanley and Helen (Shafer) Powell. He was a lifelong farmer in Preble County, who many knew by his childhood nickname of “Sherm.” He enjoyed coon hunting and fishing throughout his life, with an interest in guns, knives, horses, and dogs. He was a 1954 graduate of Farmersville High School and went on to serve in the United States Army as an instructor in tanks. He was the most self-sacrificing, hard-working provider a family ever had. He is much loved and will be missed dearly by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers Robert, James, Norman, and Richard Powell; and his sister Betty Lou Powell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Georgia L. (“Sis”) Powell; son Jeff Powell of West Manchester, OH; and daughter Beth (Tom) Wolber of Delaware, OH; grandchildren Kyle (Rachel) Powell of West Alexandria, OH; Katelyn Powell of Lewisburg, OH; Carmen Wolber of Columbus, OH; and Jeffrey Powell, Jr. of Lewisburg, OH; and great-grandchildren Kaden, Madison, and Marlee. He is also survived by his brothers Thomas (Patty) Powell of West Alexandria, OH; Gerald (Patty) Powell of Canada; and William (JoAnn) Powell of Lewisburg, OH, as well as sisters-in-law Vicki, Becky, and Sharon Powell. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 also at the Girton Schmidt & Boucher Gard Funeral Home with Pastor Kenneth Harbaum officiating.
