It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of John Leonard Stotler who left us on August 28th, 2024. He was a man of character and wit, leaving a mark on all who knew him.
Born in Eaton, Ohio he developed a lifelong love for sailing while a counselor at Culver Military Academy. Sailing was a testament to his adventurous spirit that he shared with his family and a close group of friends who explored and celebrated adventures together on Lake Champlain in Vermont, the challenging waters of the Caribbean or the charming canals of France and England.
A proud alumnus of Harvard College (’60) and Harvard Law School (‘63), John shared his strong work ethic and respect for the wisdom of the Law with his team at National Life of Vermont’s Legal Department. John lived by the mantra, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going," a guiding principle that defined both his personal and professional life. He faced life's challenges and ultimately Alzheimer’s with resilience, inspiring those around him to meet adversity with strength and a dose of humor. His sharp intellect made him a real asset to any Trivia Team that was lucky enough to have him.
He is survived by Patricia his wife of over 60 years, his daughter Elizabeth, her husband Dan Robertson, his grand-daughter Ru Robertson, and his beloved sidekick, Pixie. John’s intelligence and encouragement to pursue excellence will be fondly remembered, and the charts he laid out for his family will be captained by his example.
John will come home to rest with his parents at Mound Hill Cemetery in Eaton, Ohio, the town his grandfather helped to build. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Preble County Historical Society (www.preblecountyhistoricalsociety.com) reflecting the Stotler Family’s deep local roots and appreciation of the previous generations whose hard work inspires us to share our own best efforts with the world. Fair winds, John. A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date. Gard Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Eaton is assisting with arrangements.
